What do the conservatives stand for?

The Conservative Party stands for free markets, lower taxes, a strong defence, law and order, the Union and gradual rather than radical change. It usually favours a smaller state and individual responsibility. It governed from 2010 to 2024 and is currently the main opposition at Westminster.

Conservatism draws on a belief in tradition, institutions and practical experience over grand theory. Its modern party combines several strands. One Nation Conservatives stress social responsibility and helping the less well off. Free-market Conservatives, influenced by the 1980s governments, stress low taxes and deregulation. The party is one of the oldest in the world. It has governed for longer than any other party in modern British history.

The party's recent priorities have included cutting immigration, controlling public spending and lower taxes on work and business. It has also backed tougher sentencing, higher defence spending and leaving the European Convention on Human Rights. It campaigned for Brexit after the 2016 referendum and delivered it in 2020. It also champions the Union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

At the 2024 general election the party won 121 seats, its lowest total ever, after fourteen years in power. It now faces competition on the right from Reform UK and on the centre from the Liberal Democrats. Debates inside the party focus on how far to move right on immigration and Europe, and how to win back younger voters.

Main opposition, led by Kemi Badenoch. Platform: cut property and inheritance taxes, fund this with £47bn of savings from welfare, aid and the civil service, leave the ECHR, cap migration and back oil and gas over net zero.
